The advantages of partnering with Impulsive Walrus Books:

- Up-front advance.  Immediate payment once the final edits to your novel are completed.
- Royalty on all sales, digital, audio, and physical.
- Professional editing services
- Professional covers
- Access to an online community of people who want to read quality genre fiction.
- Money only flows from you to us if you are purchasing physical copies at your wholesale discount.  You are the product.  You are not the customer.

Our expectations of our authors:

- Work with us to complete the editing process for your novel

- Treat your editor, cover artist, and the rest of the team that is working on your book with civility and respect.

- Treat your fans as you would want to be treated as a fan yourself.
- Participate in marketing your novel.  This may include video appearances and interviews as well as your own individual marketing efforts.
- DO NOT use Artificial Intelligence to generate any portion of your work.
- Understand that we are a small press that is devoted to quality over quantity, and that we move slowly as a result.  Your novel will not be published next month.  It may take a year or two--but you will be proud of the result.

Guidelines For Submission

These guidelines apply to novels only.  For inclusion in an Impulsive Walrus Anthology, please see the guidelines posted along with that anthology call.

We are looking for novels in any form of speculative fiction.  Science fiction, fantasy, urban fantasy, weird west--all are welcome to submit.  The fact is, we've found that readers want really good books more than they want a specific genre of book.

We are not looking for erotica.

1.  Submit your novel in full.  No synopsis is necessary, but a quick pitch element is provided in the submission form below.  No cover letter is necessary.  We will accept or reject your work on the quality of that work alone.

2.  NO Artificial Intelligence.  AI must not be used to draft any portion of your novel.  Impulsive Walrus Books has a commitment to its customers that the products they purchase will be crafted by humans.  By submitting to us, you are representing to us that you have not used Artificial Intelligence to generate any portion of your Work.  Automated systems for double-checking your spelling, grammar, etc. are fine.  Generating your text with AI is not.

3.  A confirmation screen will appear.  This will be the only confirmation you receive that your novel has been submitted.  If you feel the compulsive need to double check, e-mail frog@jonestales.com.

4.  Simultaneous Submissions are allowed.  We understand an author's desire to be submitted in as many places at once.  However, if we are your second choice--or if you intend to wait to hear back from someone else before actually proceeding with a contract from us--please do us the courtesy of letting us know this in your Quick Pitch section.  If you have decided to withdraw your manuscript from our consideration, please do us the courtesy of letting us know by e-mailing frog@jonestales.com.  Working on a manuscript that you've already sold elsewhere would be sad.

5.  Rejections happen fast.  Acceptances happen slow.  Frog will let you know if you have been rejected as soon as he reads your work and decides he does not wish to purchase it.  An acceptance, however, requires that Frog and Esther both read your work and determine it is worth investing in.  Frog will let you know if he has decided to show your work to Esther, but have some grace for our time periods.  And the longer it is before you hear from us, the more likely it is that your work will eventually be accepted.

6.  By submitting you represent that you have read and agree with our privacy policy.  You also represent that you have the rights to publish the work in text, ebook, and audiobook format and you are agreeing to hold Impulsive Walrus Books harmless from any dispute as to your rights.

7.  MANUSCRIPT FORMAT

  • 8.5"×11" or A4 paper size.

  • Times New Roman, Calibri, Courier, or Ariel font.  Other fonts will get you rejected.  Comic Sans and Papyrus will get you a hit squad.

  • 12-point font size.

  • Double-spaced lines of text,

  • 1, 1.25 or 1.5 inch margins.

  • Paragraph indentation of 0.5 inches.  DO NOT USE TAB TO INDENT, use auto-formatting.

  • Submissions must be sent in .doc or .rtf format.  If we receive a .docx, we will assume you are trying to hack us.  If we received a .pdf, we will roll our eyes and move on.  If we receive a .odt, we will understand but also we will move on to the next submission, because interfacing and converting a .odt is difficult to edit.  You can convert this to an RTF file yourself before sending.

  • Edits will be done in Microsoft Word using the Review tools.  We expect you to be able to read, understand, and respond to these edits and comments.
